AL-AAKHIR comes from the Arabic root “hamza-khaa-raa” (أ خ ر), which carries several interconnected meanings. Linguistically, it points to the latter, final, ultimate, or that which comes at the end. This root appears in various forms approximately 250 times in the Quran, indicating its significance in Islamic theology.
AL-AAKHIR, as a divine attribute, means that Allah is the Last without having a beginning. He is the One who remains after everything else perishes. Nothing exists beyond Him, as He is the Ultimate who will endure after all creation has passed away. This name is perfectly complemented by Allah’s name AL-AWWAL (The First), illustrating His complete and perfect existence beyond time constraints.
Az-Zajjaj, a renowned scholar, explained: “AL-AAKHIR is behind everything and remains after everything.” This divine attribute reminds us that Allah’s existence has no end, just as it had no beginning. He transcends the limitations of time that constrain His creation.
Al-Khattabi said: “AL-AAKHIR is the One who remains after the creation perishes, and it does not mean the one who has no end; similarly, AL-AWWAL does not mean the one who has no beginning. He is AL-AWWAL and AL-AAKHIR, not because He is first and last.”
AL-AAKHIR in the Quran and Hadith
The name AL-AAKHIR appears explicitly in the Quran in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 3, where Allah describes Himself with four complementary attributes:
هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Sheikh Tosun Bayrak beautifully explains this relationship: “It is proper to read, recite, and consider the attributes ‘The First’ and ‘The Last’ together because the meaning is like a circle where the first and the last are one.” This circular understanding helps us grasp how Allah encompasses all existence from beginning to end.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
