Hamaza and Ayesha go round their home greeting the family, at the door, in the living room and with their grandmother. Each time, they say “Assalamu Alaikum” with a smile and a wave, and hear the reply, “Wa Alaikum Assalam”. It is a gentle song for practising a greeting children can use every day.
The words in this song
Watch together Try together Remember together
1. Watch together
Sit side by side and sing the chorus with your child.
2. Try together
Play “Salam at the Door” for about two minutes.
3. Remember together
Say salam to the next person who comes home today.

Try it together: Salam at the Door
- Stand together on opposite sides of an open doorway, keeping your child in sight.
- Your child knocks gently on the door frame, steps through, waves and says “Assalamu Alaikum!”
- You reply with a big smile: “Wa Alaikum Assalam!”
- Swap roles, so your child practises the reply too.
- Greet a favourite teddy together, then the next person you see at home.
Parent tip
Greet your child with “Assalamu Alaikum” when they wake up or when you collect them. Hearing and practising it with you every day can help the greeting become familiar.
For parents: The Qur’an teaches us to return a greeting with a better one, or at least the same (Surah An-Nisa 4:86), which is why the song practises the reply as well as the greeting.
