Who was Prophet Adam? In Islam, Adam (peace be upon him) was the first human being and the first prophet, created by Allah and taught directly by Him. The story of Prophet Adam is told in several places in the Qur’an, especially Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-A’raf, and it answers some of the deepest questions about who we are and why we are here.
1. A Successor on Earth
Before creating Adam, Allah informed the angels of His plan:
“Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.”
— Qur’an 2:30, Saheeh International (quran.com)
The creation of Prophet Adam had a purpose. Humanity was given a responsibility: to live on earth as trustees, according to Allah’s guidance.
2. Created from Clay
“And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.”
— Qur’an 23:12, Saheeh International (quran.com)
Humble in origin, yet honoured by Allah: “And We have certainly honored the children of Adam” (Qur’an 17:70). Allah also created Adam’s wife, known in Islamic tradition as Hawwa (Eve), from the same soul (Qur’an 4:1).
3. Taught the Names
“And He taught Adam the names – all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, “Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.””
— Qur’an 2:31, Saheeh International (quran.com)
Lesson: Knowledge is one of the gifts that sets human beings apart.
4. Iblees Refuses
“And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam”; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”
— Qur’an 2:34, Saheeh International (quran.com)
Iblees explained his refusal with pride: “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay” (Qur’an 7:12).
Lesson: Arrogance was the first sin; humility protects us from it.
5. The Garden and the Tree
“O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”
— Qur’an 2:35, Saheeh International (quran.com)
Satan whispered to them both, claiming the tree would make them angels or immortal (Qur’an 7:20), and they ate from it. In the Qur’anic account, Adam and his wife both slipped; there is no blame placed on the woman alone.

6. Repentance and Forgiveness
The turning point in the story of Prophet Adam is repentance. Adam and his wife turned to Allah at once: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers” (Qur’an 7:23).
“Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.”
— Qur’an 2:37, Saheeh International (quran.com)
This is why Islam does not teach inherited “original sin”: Adam repented and was forgiven, and each person is responsible for their own deeds.
7. Life on Earth with Guidance
“Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance – there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
— Qur’an 2:38, Saheeh International (quran.com)
Prophet Adam began the long line of prophets through whom Allah sent that guidance, ending with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. See the major prophets of Islam and lessons from the prophets.
