Tawheed: The Oneness of Allah Explained in 3 Beautiful Parts

What is Tawheed? The Oneness of Allah explained through Surah Al-Ikhlas and other verses, its three aspects, shirk, and what Tawheed means in daily life.

What is Tawheed? Tawheed is the belief in the absolute Oneness of Allah. It is the central teaching of Islam and the first half of the Shahada: there is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Every act of worship, and the whole Islamic worldview, rests on it.

The word comes from the Arabic root w-h-d, meaning “one”. This guide explains it through the Qur’an, the ways scholars have described it, and what it means in daily life.

Tawheed in One Chapter: Surah Al-Ikhlas

The clearest summary of Tawheed is Surah Al-Ikhlas, chapter 112 of the Qur’an:

“Say, “He is Allāh, [who is] One, Allāh, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.””

— Qur’an 112:1–4, Saheeh International (quran.com)

In four short verses it affirms that Allah is One, that everything depends on Him while He depends on nothing, and that nothing is comparable to Him.

The Message of Every Prophet

Belief in the Oneness of Allah was not new with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Qur’an says it was the message of every messenger:

“And We sent not before you any messenger except We revealed to him that, “There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.””

— Qur’an 21:25, Saheeh International (quran.com)

How Scholars Describe Tawheed

Many scholars explain the Oneness of Allah under three headings. This is a teaching framework to help understanding; all three belong together:

AspectMeaning
Tawheed al-RububiyyahAllah alone is the Creator, Sustainer and Controller of everything.
Tawheed al-UluhiyyahAllah alone deserves worship, prayer, reliance and devotion.
Tawheed al-Asma’ wa’l-SifatAllah’s names and attributes are affirmed as He described them, without likening Him to creation.

Every Muslim affirms Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah in every prayer: “It is You we worship and You we ask for help” (Qur’an 1:5).

The Names and Attributes of Allah

“And to Allāh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.”

— Qur’an 7:180, Saheeh International (quran.com)

At the same time, “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing” (Qur’an 42:11). Learning the 99 Names of Allah is one of the most beautiful ways to deepen this belief; explore our series beginning with Al-Malik and As-Saboor.

The Opposite of Tawheed: Shirk

Shirk means associating partners with Allah, whether by worshipping others or giving anyone else what belongs only to Him. The Qur’an treats it as the gravest sin:

“Indeed, Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”

— Qur’an 4:48, Saheeh International (quran.com)

Tawheed in Daily Life

The Prophet ﷺ asked Mu’adh bin Jabal what Allah’s right is upon His servants, and answered: “To worship Him (Allah) Alone and to join none in worship with Him (Allah)” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7373).

  • In prayer: worship directed to Allah alone.
  • In hardship: relying on Allah (tawakkul) while taking practical steps; see our guide to tawakkul.
  • In gratitude: recognising every blessing as from Allah.
  • In freedom: it frees the heart from fear of, and dependence on, anything other than Allah.
