Miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: 5 Remarkable Signs

Explore the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the Qur’an and Sahih al-Bukhari: the Qur’an itself, the splitting of the moon, the Night Journey and more.

What were the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ? Every prophet was supported by signs from Allah, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was no exception. His greatest and lasting miracle is the Qur’an itself, but authentic sources also record other signs witnessed by his companions. This guide sets out the main miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the Qur’an and Sahih al-Bukhari describe them, and what they mean for believers today. For the miracles of earlier prophets, see 12 miracles in the Quran.

The Qur’an: The Greatest Miracle

The Prophet ﷺ explained how his miracle differed from those of earlier prophets:

“Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed, but what I have been given, is Divine Inspiration which Allah has revealed to me. So I hope that my followers will outnumber the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 4981 (Sunnah.com does not display a separate grading for this collection)

Earlier miracles were seen by the people of their time. Among the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Qur’an is unique: it remains available to anyone who wishes to read it, and it challenges its readers directly:

“Say, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’ān, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.””

— Qur’an 17:88, Saheeh International

The Splitting of the Moon

“The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].”

— Qur’an 54:1, Saheeh International

“That the Meccan people requested Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) to show them a miracle, and so he showed them the splitting of the moon.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 3637 (narrated by Anas) (Sunnah.com does not display a separate grading for this collection)

The Night Journey (Al-Isra)

“Exalted is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

— Qur’an 17:1, Saheeh International

The journey from Makkah to Jerusalem in one night, followed by the ascension (Mi‘raj), is described in detail in authentic hadith collections. Read more in the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Water Flowing from His Fingers

Among the physical miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recorded by Al-Bukhari is this one. At Al-Hudaibiya, the companions had almost no water. Jabir bin ‘Abdullah described what happened:

“So he placed his hand in that pot and the water started flowing among his fingers like springs. We all drank and performed ablution (from it).”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 3576 (part of the narration) (Sunnah.com does not display a separate grading for this collection)

When asked how many they were, Jabir said they were fifteen hundred.

The Palm Trunk That Cried

“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to deliver his sermons while standing beside a trunk of a datepalm. When he had the pulpit made, he used it instead. The trunk started crying and the Prophet (ﷺ) went to it, rubbing his hand over it (to stop its crying).”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 3583 (narrated by Ibn ‘Umar) (Sunnah.com does not display a separate grading for this collection)

Editorial reflection. Many readers find this one of the most moving accounts of the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: even a piece of wood was attached to the Prophet ﷺ, a reminder of the love believers are encouraged to have for him.

What the Miracles of the Prophet Muhammad Teach Us

  • They point to Allah. Every miracle happened by Allah’s will and permission, not by the Prophet’s own power.
  • The Qur’an is still here. The lasting miracle is one we can read, recite and reflect on every day.
  • Care for people. Several miracles, such as the water at Al-Hudaibiya, came when the companions were in need, showing Allah’s care through His Messenger ﷺ.
